So since almost all house music blogs are dedicating posts to this weird copyrighting things between Swedish house producer Avicii and American pop singer Leona Lewis, we also wanted to write one post about this. Is it a crime? Are Leona and her management allowed to recreate the track? Did Avicii just steal the melody himself? And what has Afrojack to do with all this? What's actually going on?
So if you listen to Leona Lewis' new single "Collide", you can clearly hear that she used Avicii's track "Fade Into Darkness" also known as "Penguin". Or doesn't she? Actually, she doesn't. She wanted to at first, but Avicii and his management, AtNight, refused to let her use the track, since Avicii wanted to release it himself and make a vocal version of it as well. But Leona apperantly wanted the beat so much that she hired American producer Sandy Vee to reproduce the track so she could use it and release it before Avicii would. So they just took the melody, and other elements out of "Fade Into Darkness" and made it her own. Without the knowledge or approval of neither Avicii and AtNight.
So this is the point where Afrojack joins the story. Unlike a lot of house DJ's who are letting the world know via Twitter that they think Leona Lewis just steals the beat and that it's totally wrong, Afrojack actually says that there's no stealing going on at all. In fact, Afrojack remixed Leona Lewis' "Collide" and not Avicii's "Fade Into Darkness". So Afrojack apperantly joins the side of Leona, and with that, becomes (in this case) an 'enemy' of his colleage Avicii and almost half of the Electronic Dance Scene.
Avicii then got on Twitter, and tended to share hís side of the story with the world. A full report of what he and his management think about the whole situation is coming up so for that, keep an eye on Avicii's Twitter page. Underneath here you can see that there are Tweets going back and forth between the two party's and this is an example of what they are saying:
So basically it's just a big messy situation going on over there, and nobody really seems to know whats right or wrong in here.
If you'd ask us who we think is right? Avicii. No doubt. He is the (semi-, Penguin Cafe Orgestra was a big inspiration for the melody)creator of the track and Leona Lewis basically just steals it in our opinion. But hey, everybody seems to have an opinion about this situation, so if our opinion counts? We don't know anymore.
